Bicycle check day
Practical information for teachers of The international school of The Hague
what will we be doing?
On Monday, October 14th, we will be organizing a bicycle check day at your school. This educational activity consists of three parts: a bicycle check, a traffic quiz, and a cycling skills game. During this day students’ bicycles will be inspected for any damage or missing parts and we will carry out minor repairs. Additionally, through a survey, we will map out the students’ bicycle ownership and usage. This activity raises students’ awareness of the importance of a safe bicycle and provides the school with insight into students’ bicycle use and ownership. The bicycle check day is meant for year 3 through 7.
Explanation of lesson components
A lesson lasts 50 minutes. At the start of each lesson, students receive a brief instruction on the different activities. Then, three groups are formed and distributed across the activities. Each activity lasts approximately 15 minutes. All students can participate in every part of the lesson, even those who do not have their own bicycle or those who do not come to school with their bicycle.
bicycle check (1)
The students’ bicycles are inspected using a checklist with 15 control points, focusing on the most important parts of the bicycle. Minor repairs will be carried out immediately, if possible. If the bicycle is in good condition, the student is rewarded with an “OK” sticker. If the bicycle is not in order, the student will receive advice on how to fix it. Additionally, we will ask students a few questions about bicycle ownership and usage.
cycling skills game (2)
The students practice various skills in the form of a game on the bicycle. A teacher, trainee, or parent from the school will guide the students during this activity.
traffic quiz (3)
In this activity, students participate in a traffic quiz with a fun prize to be won. A teacher, trainee, or parent guides the students during this activity. The quiz will be in Dutch.
